Does Walmart have propane tank exchange?

Yes. Walmart sells Blue Rhino propane exchange, according to its own product listing, and AmeriGas's store finder lists Walmart stores for AmeriGas exchange too, so the brand you find depends on the store.[1][2]

How it works at Walmart

  • Walmart also sells a Blue Rhino tank with no empty to trade in: its listing says “No exchange tank needed.”[3]
  • Where the exchange is a Blue Rhino vending machine, you pay by card at the machine and a door opens for your old tank. A separate No Exchange button sells a tank without a trade-in.[4][5]
  • At a staffed Blue Rhino display, Blue Rhino says to leave your empty tank at the outdoor display, pay inside, and a store associate will bring you a full tank. Never take a propane tank inside the store.[6]
  • Blue Rhino accepts any brand of standard grill tank in exchange, as long as it is in acceptable condition, and its own tanks hold a net 15 pounds of propane.[7][8]
  • In 2008, according to the FTC, Walmart, which bought exchange tanks from both Blue Rhino and AmeriGas, refused to accept the suppliers’ cut in fill from 17 to 15 pounds.[9]

Can I exchange any brand of tank at Walmart?

When Does a Propane Tank Expire?

Twelve years from the date stamped on the collar, then a requalification interval that depends on the test method. An out-of-date cylinder cannot legally be refilled.
